This is one of those milestone weeks…my oldest son, Daniel is graduating from college while I am in the process of finishing My Goal Setting Workbook for my upcoming workshop called “Life Plan- Define Your Future” so it just seems appropriate to write on this topic.
When you are a kid growing up the sky is the limit. Then if you decide to go the academic route you may find yourself in college and well, for the most part picking a major by happenstance (or at least I did). When you graduate then you hopefully go out and experience the world. Oh, but then the obstacles, challenges, and hurdles start showing up and life gets in the way of the once vibrant and exciting dream you once had as a child.
That is where the bucket list comes in. What if it were mandatory for every kid to write out a bucket list when they graduate (maybe there is still a chance). What if, unlike the famous movie of two dying men (played by Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson) who write out their a list before they kick the bucket, our children write out their list as they launch into their adulthood and independently venture out into the world? What if the two question they ask in the movie were actually 2 Life Goals that one sets early on their early adulthood?
Question #1 -Are you really happy with your life…became Goal #1- To be happy with your life!
Question #2– Have you really made other people happy during your life? became Goal #2-To help make other people happy in their life.
I have a dream that goes like this..instead of regret and disappointment at the end of one’s life it is a time to celebrate that every moment was lived to its fullest potential. This new emerging paradigm doesn’t put things off until there are only a few precious months left to live before thinking about creating a bucket list. I would love to hear YOUR thoughts and comments?
Have you written out your own bucket list? Not yet?
